Mayo en Miami
Preliminar Repaso B
This week we begin our review of the Preliminar chapter. We completed one reading selection in class together (Preliminar Repaso 1). Mayo en Miami is the second reading selection (due in class next week). These assignments use many of the skills we learned in Spanish this year (and more) and are a good way to "tie" it all together. The Repaso B homework is very similar to the chapter test. We will review both in class next week. The test will be on May 19. ¡Feliz fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Altagracia!
no hay tarea
On January 21, the people of the Dominican Republic celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Altagracia. This title of the Virgin Mary was given to a painted image that came to the DR from Spain in the 1500s. There are many stories about the painting, but one of them includes a little girl who dreamed about an image of the Virgin Mary. She asked her merchant father to find a painting of the image for her. He searched for the image unsuccessfully until one day, an old wanderer pulled a painting from a bag, gave it to him, and disappeared. The merchant's daughter knew it was the exact image from her dream, but the painting kept disappearing from the girl's room and was found each time under an orange tree. Of course, a Church was built on the spot and as you might expect, people celebrate the day with oranges! This is the fun story we heard in class today. It is a terrific example of the national devotions to our Blessed Mother from all over Spain and Latin America. There is no additional homework. Happy feast!

¡Feliz Día de los Reyes Magos!
Many people in Latin America and Spain continue their Christmas celebration until February 2nd, the feast of Candlemas (Candelaria, aka the feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the temple). So, today students in grade three read a book about the wisemen who visited Jesus after His birth and talked about the feast of Epiphany (a little later than usual!), which is the day many children in Latin America and Spain receive gifts. We had a little fun today, singing Christmas songs and making a "triptych" of the Epiphany scene. There is no additional homework.

¡Feliz fiesta de la Virgen de Guadalupe! There is no homework this week. Happy feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe! The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in Mexico to Juan Diego, an Aztec Indian, several times in 1531. She asked that a Church be built on the spot where she appeared, Tepeyac Hill (now in a suburb of Mexico City). The Bishop asked for a sign before he would approve construction of a Church. Our Lady appeared again to Juan Diego and told him to collect roses for the Bishop (in December!). Juan Diego opened his cloak, or tilma, in front of the Bishop - letting dozens of Castilian roses fall to the floor and revealing the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe imprinted on the inside of his cloak. It is this tilma with her miraculous image that is now venerated in the Basilica of Guadalupe. It is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world and the most popular devotion in Mexico.

In this chapter, we will learn to greet people, say good-bye, use vocabulary of courtesy, count to 100, identify the days of the week and the months of the year, found out and give the date, ask and tell the time, and discuss seasons and weather. We will use the entire year to complete the Preliminar chapter. Today students were given a worksheet, due next Thursday, Greetings 1-2, which we began in class. Dios Te Salve María (practice the Hail Mary prayer)
Today we learned to say the Hail Mary in Spanish. Students should practice saying the prayer this week. All Spanish prayers should be in the back of the Spanish binder in the resource section.
September 30, 2021
Dios Te Salve María (the Hail Mary prayer)
The Blessed Virgin Mary has visited the people of Latin America and Spain many times. Each time, she is dressed very differently. We talked in class today about just a few of the different devotions to our Blessed Mother in Spanish Speaking Countries: Our Lady of Coromoto (Venezuela), the Virgin of Guadalupe (Mexico), Our Lady of the Pillar (Spain), Our Lady of Aparecida (the Amazon region), and more. I honestly don't know how I could have learned the language, culture and traditions of Latin America without learning about their great devotion to the Virgin Mary! It's in everything! We will learn to pray the Hail Mary in Spanish to honor our Blessed Mother through the month of October. The homework this week is to make the prayer a beautiful work of art students will keep in their binders in order to practice with the prayer.
September 23, 2021
Spanish Speaking Countries map
Today we read Esperando el Biblioburro, a book about a mobile library carried between small towns in Colombia on the backs of donkeys! We are learning about all the Spanish speaking countries - there are 21 of them. We started the homework in class and students should finish the assignment at home. We noticed that there are several countries in Central and South America where Spanish is not the national language (Belize, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil) so they are not on our list of 21. There are extra copies of the map in the blue homework box in our classroom.
September 16, 2021
Gloria prayer
Today we began our class with a story using plenty of classroom words, ¿Cómo van a la escuela los dinosaurs?. We learned the Glory Be prayer in Spanish: how to pronounce the words, what they mean, and a new term - "friendly words." Friendly words are generally known as "cognates," words in Spanish that look or sound like a similar word in English. In the Glory Be prayer we noticed words like Espíritu Santo (Holy Spirit), Gloria (glory), and Amén. Students were asked to practice their prayer at home and to color the border of the prayer. It should be kept in the back of their Spanish binder, as we will use this prayer throughout the year. Extra copies of the prayer can be found in the blue homework box in our classroom (Grade 3) or by clicking the PRELIMINAR CHAPTER HOMEWORK link above to print the PDF^^.

La clase de Español
Jesusito
We did Jesusito in class, but students were invited to finish coloring the prayer from last year at home. We will begin learning the Glory Be in Spanish next week. We worked on some of the vocabulary we use each week during class. The homework, La clase de Español, may look familiar - we used it last year and we are practicing with it again this fall. Students should use the front of the page to complete the back of the homework. Extra copies of the homework can be printed using the Preliminar Chapter Homework link above^^ or in the blue homework box in the Spanish classroom. If a student is absent from Spanish class, they should check this website and/or the blue homework box to get their work. Students are responsible to make up any work they miss and come to class with homework completed.
September 2, 2021
Juego de búsqueda
This week we reviewed Jesusito and learned how to use this website. We answered all of the questions on the Juego de búsqueda homework as a class before passing it out to students. Students were given a short time at the end of class to get started on their own papers. It is due next Thursday. Additional copies of the homework can be printed using the Preliminar Chapter Homework link above ^^ or in the blue homework box (grade 3 folder) in our classroom.

Read Este Año
Come to class with Spanish binder, pencil pouch, homework
¡Bienvenidos a la clase de Español! Welcome to Spanish class! At St. Catharine School, students in grade 3 begin Spanish 1A I our Así se dice textbook. This week we found our seats, read Jabari Salta, and learned a few of the things we say in the Spanish classroom. The only homework for this week is to read Este Año en la clase de Español together with your parents! Students should have a three ring binder, three dividers with pockets, three page protectors, and a small supply of looseleaf paper. Please leave the extra dividers, page protectors, and stacks of looseleaf at home. I have learned that little ones find it hard to open their three ring binders and stay organized for class when they have so many extra supplies in there - and besides ... those page protectors are slippery!
August 16, 2021 Happy summer! There are no summer assignments for grade 3, but there are lots of fun videos for you if you'd like to practice your Spanish. Head back to the Summer Bingo page to check them out!
Verano, 2021 Wow - it's so strange to look back on those last posts from the pandemic and see how much crazy we went through together this year! Your summer assignments/videos will be up on July 1. Take a break!!!
¡Hola clase! What do you do when things go wrong? Pete the Cat doesn't seem to let anything bother him! Click the little arrow/triangle in the center of the video to read Pete el Gato with me (and check back next week for another story):
¡Hola amigos! Are there any rabbits in your yard? We have so many little rabbits in our backyard this spring. Click the little triangle/arrow in the center of the screen to read Los Colores with me (and check back next week for another story):
¿Qué tal muchachos? Is anyone napping at your house? When the days are rainy and everyone is staying home, I bet at least your cats or your dogs are sleeping. Check back next week for another story. Click the little triangle/arrow in the center of the screen to read La casa adormecida with me:
¡Hola muchachos! It looks like we will not be returning to the school building this year, but we can practice our Spanish anyway. Check back once a week for a new video. Click the little triangle/arrow in the center of the screen to watch Harry el perrito sucio:

no homework over the break
This week, students in grade three Spanish did not have class because I was absent from school. When we return from the break, we will begin reading and speaking in class with everything we have learned in this chapter.
March 6, 2020
El tiempo
This week students in grade three Spanish began working on weather vocabulary. This is the last unit of the chapter. We will soon begin reading and speaking in class with everything we have learned this chapter.
February 28, 2020
Las estaciones
This week students in grade three Spanish continued working with the seasons of the year. There is some new vocabulary on one side of the homework, which we went over in class. Many students wrote the new words on a memory sheet in their Spanish binders.
February 21, 2020
Las estaciones del año
This week students in grade three Spanish began learning the seasons of the year. In class, we began a project to make a dial with the months of the year and their corresponding seasons. Each student was given a brass fastener to assemble their dial. They should cut out the three pieces, draw a picture to correspond with each season and color in the rings of the dial with a color associated with the season. Many students completed their assignment in class.
February 14, 2020
La hora
This week students in grade three continued working on how to tell time in Spanish. If your student is having trouble with this multi-step process, follow the steps below to help them! They should have their numbers sheet out as well.
February 7, 2020
¿Qué hora es?
This week students in grade three learned how to tell time in Spanish. This is another multi-step process where you can help your student if they have trouble.
Determine if the answer should begin with "'Es la ..." (during the one o'clock hour) or "Son las ..." (during all other hours)
Look at the short hand and write the number word for the hours in Spanish
Write the word "y" in Spanish (and)
Look at the long hand and write the number word for the minutes in Spanish
Example: 1:15
Es la una y quince.
Example 4:25
Son las cuatro y veinticinco.
Example 5:30
Son las cinco y treinta. (or Son las cinco y media.) Students can use their numbers sheets if needed to find the correct number words in Spanish. The homework will be due in class next Friday.
January 31, 2020
¿Qué fecha es hoy?
This week grade three Spanish turned in last week's homework, La fecha 1. We finished working with the days of the week, the months of the year, and telling the date. The last practice for telling the date requires students to use both their memory sheet and their number sheet on their homework. If your student is struggling with this multi-step process, you can help them by walking through the number, the day of the week, the month, and back to the numbers sheet to tell the year - step by step until they are comfortable doing it on their own. The other words they will need (hoy, cumpleaños, etc.) are also on the memory sheet.
January 24, 2020
La Fecha 1
This week grade three Spanish got back to business! We have been working on the days of the week and the months of the year. Today we added a new skill, telling the date. The date in Spanish is given in a different format than in English - the number and the month trade spots:
Friday, January 24, 2020 viernes, 24 enero, 2020
Notice that the day of the week and the month of the year are also lowercase. This is a three step process and it can be challenging for some students. In order to complete the homework, students should take out their memory sheet and their number sheet. The memory sheet has a list of days and months (plus a few other important words) to help them complete their worksheet for this week.
January 10, 2020
No homework
This week grade three celebrated Día de los Reyes Magos - Three Kings Day. We watched some of the Reyes Magos parade in Spain and made a triptych. There will be no class on Friday, January 16, due to the teacher records day.
December 13, 2019
no homework over Christmas break
This week we celebrated the Virgin of Guadalupe and talked about the Basilica built for her in Mexico City. There is no homework over Christmas break. ¡Feliz navidad!
December 6, 2019
Los Meses, La Semana
This week in class, we began learning the months of the year in Spanish. We created a memory sheet: loose leaf paper, folded in half with Spanish words down the left side of the fold and their English translation down the right side of the fold. Students will use that vocabulary list to work on their homework.
November 22, 2019
Days of the Week
This week we reviewed the days of the week homework, Yesterday and Today, together. We also completed much of this week's homework together in class, Days of the Week. It was a matching assignment - students should have cut the correct work off the bottom of their homework sheet and glued it into the correct space on the worksheet.
November 15, 2019
Yesterday and Today
This week I realized that I have not been teaching our students in grade three how to organize their Spanish binders. We spent some time today getting organized and I encouraged them to keep some of their Spanish worksheets in their binders as a resource. This confusion is completely my fault and we will focus on that for the rest of the year. I will give students a little "cheat sheet" next week with the greetings, classroom commands, and vocabulary for speaking politely that we have learned so far this year, which they can keep in their binders. Please don't throw away (or recycle) anything in your student's Spanish binder from this point on. Because we spent so much time organizing our Spanish binders, we did not get much time to work on the new vocabulary for this week - days of the week. I asked students to have a look at the homework, but we will work on it together in class next week.
November 8
Algúnos Numeros
This week Spanish students in grade three continued learning numbers 0-100. Homework is due next Friday.
November 1
Día de Muertos (color by Number)
This week we celebrated Dia de los Muertos, the Day(s) of the Dead. It is a celebration throughout Latin America and even the United States. A mixture of Latin American traditions and Catholic traditions, it is a time to remember family and friends who have died with a colorful and joyful celebration. Sadly, we were not able to create our school ofrenda this year but the students learned about the different symbols and traditions of this great celebration of life and death. We continue to work on numbers in grade 3. Homework is due next Friday.
October 18, 2019
Hasta Cien
This week we continued learning numbers in Spanish. We are now up to 100! They should definitely use the numbers page resource they were given two weeks ago to complete the Hasta Cien homework. It is really important that students practice spelling the numbers correctly - especially with so much repetition. We wouldn't want them to repeat the same error over and over again on the homework. That sort of mistake is hard to fix once it gets stuck in your brain! No class next week due to teacher record day. The above homework is not due until November 1!
October 11, 2019
Counting On
This week we continued learning numbers in Spanish. We are now up to 40! They should definitely use the numbers page resource they were given last week to complete the Counting On homework to practice those numbers correctly.
October 4, 2019
Color by number
This week we began learning number in Spanish. Each student received a numbers page, a list of all the numbers in Spanish. I asked them to put it in a page protector because they will use this sheet throughout their years at St. Catharine. It can be used this week to complete the color by number homework.
September 27, 2019
Speaking Politely
This week we learned some of the words we would use to speak respectfully and politely to others: please, thank you, you're welcome, sir, madam, etc. We reviewed the homework together and practiced ordering from a menu using these respectful words. Additional copies of the homework are available by clicking the link above ^^ or they can also be found in the blue homework box in the Spanish classroom.

Greetings 1a
This week students in grade three discussed classroom procedures in Spanish and watched a video about the many Spanish speaking countries in the world. We spent a significant amount of time discussing what to do if a student misses Spanish class. Students are responsible for completing missed work before the next class. Often, the assignments can be printed by clicking the green homework box above. ^^ If the assignment cannot be printed at home, it can be printed at school, or the student can write the answers on a piece of looseleaf paper - reading off of an electronic copy. Sometimes, the homework is only available in the blue homework box by the sink in the Art/Spanish classroom. In that case, on the day a student returns to school, they should ask permission to go into the Art/Spanish room to retrieve whatever assignments are in the grade three folder. Unless a student has missed a full week of school, there should be no time when a student was not back in school before the next Spanish class with enough time to retrieve the assignment. The only way to learn Spanish is to practice it, so I am a little less than flexible on missing assignments, even if a parent has emailed to let me know that their student does not have their Spanish homework completed.
We will introduce the first chapter of the Spanish 1a textbook, Preliminar, next week. The Greetings 1a worksheet will give us a head start with pronunciation using words that they have likely already heard and used in our k-2 Spanish classroom. You can print additional copies of the homework by clicking the link above or going to the blue homework box in the Spanish classroom, Grade 3 folder.

Welcome to Spanish at St. Catharine! This year, third grade will begin working in the Asi se dice textbook. We will work our way through the Preliminar chapter: greetings, numbers, days and months, telling time, seasons, and more. This week, students received their class newsletter (Este año en la clase de español) and a letter to take home for parents, which explains what we will do in Spanish this year. Please cut the bottom off of that parent letter and bring it to class, signed, next Friday. Additional copies of the newsletter and the parent letter are available in the blue box in the Spanish/Art room.

Repaso 1
This week students in grade three began practicing the vocabulary from the Preliminar chapter. They received a list of the vocabulary and the first reading selection, Repaso 1, about the weather in Argentina. The vocabulary page is in Spanish. I asked them to write (in pencil) next to any words they don’t already know, using word banks from earlier homework assignments. They can also use the vocabulary link on our class website. Students should ONLY READ the Repaso 1 paragraph. They should not answer the questions. I asked them to underline the words they know and circle the cognates (friendly words). Happy spring break!

Finish Seasons dial
Las estaciones
This week students in grade three learned about the seasons in Spanish. We began working on a round dial with “hands” like a clock to help learn the months and seasons. There is a tiny brass fastener in this dial. If your student did not complete it in class, I asked them to finish up at home. The assignment page, Las estaciones, continues their practice with these new vocabulary words. The homework is due next Friday in class. Additional copies of the homework are available in the blue homework box in the classroom.
